Description

Basel Castle is all hype and nothing special. Several thousand people showed up with a RSVP ticket only to be denied entrance after a minimum of 3 hours waiting. Don't waste your night, don't go.

Basel Castle has to be the biggest hype event I’ve seen. It is promoted as “the best single day event” at Art Basel but I can tell you it is not worth the time or hassle. I along with thousands of other hopeful attendees arrived around 7PM to find that there was no parking to be found anywhere. Finally after parking in a seedy side street a little too close to Overtown for my comfort we walked to the event venue only to find a line wrapped around several city blocks in the darkest, unlit streets and alleys of Wynwood. I walked to the front of the line to learn that most people had been in line for over 90 minutes and it was just 7 PM. We met up with some friends about 100 feet from the main entrance. There was two lines, the big long line for RSVP tickets which were given out free and a second line for VIP tickets which were purchased. The VIP line moved along with no delays however the RSVP line was only letting about 3-4 people per minute in the gates. At about 8 PM the RSVP line stopped moving at all as a frustrated crowd began chanting louder and louder “Let us in! Let us in!” Word traveled quickly to the back of the line that they had reached maximum capacity and people would only be let inside when others left. By 9PM the long line wrapping around the building had dissipated as people realized they were victims of a big hype scam.

Not wanting to leave without knowing what was actually happening inside, I was able to shoot over the fence and came to the realization that people who were inside were no better off. There were more and more lines limiting access to the live bands and open bar. I began to feel relieved that I decided to bail on the wait. I mean who really wants to wait in line to get a free Pabst Blue Ribbon beer – in the can! Personally, I wouldn’t even drink a PBR. But then there is the Jose Cuervo. Not my favorite tequila but not the worst either. I can only imagine how poorly it would taste mixed with cheep sugar water when I asked for a margarita. To my surprise, I saw very few people with drinks. Probably another capacity issue – one bartender with a line 50 deep, no ice, warm beer.

And to think I missed the Todd Barrett Swimwear Launch Party for this!
