A Dog’s Life

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Our new pet, Rocky, is still getting oriented to his new home. It’s a bit of a change from his cage at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. First of all it’s not air conditioned, there are no bars or echos of barking dogs. There is a big patio and pool area where people come to play. There is a 3.5 acre fenced in yard with lots of grass, woods, trails, birds, squirrels and other mysteries to explore. There’s this schizophrenic rooster on the other side of the fence who crows any time of day except sunrise. And there is a really cool, three legged, old dog named Cabo who is glad to share his home with a new friend.

So how did we get such a good match? The whole family visited the animal shelter and came up with a short list of candidates. Then we brought Cabo to the shelter and had several rounds of speed dating. Dogs are interesting animals, they immediately know if they like another dog. The first dog and Cabo met with immediate growling and lunging at each other (not pretty)! The second dog, Rocky, met Cabo with a wagging tail and lots of sniffing the other. When the third dog came in, Cabo refused to look at it, keeping his back to the other dog. Bring back Rocky and the dogs really hit it off. Even now, there is no competition for food, beds, or human attention. Both are content to share. It’s amazing, doggy speed dating really works and it resulted in a great choice. It was also very helpful in resolving family disputes over which dog to bring home.

Would you leave your mother-in-law unattended in this boat in the middle of the ocean while everyone else was snorkeling a mile away? Well our guide wasn’t worried.

Do you think Jordan could bring herself to eat this little critter?

What was Shannon thinking about while the sun was setting?

Can you imagine what the people thought in 1983 when Americans landed here to free the country of Cuban communist who over threw their government.

Photographing Kids

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Today I photographed the children of a friend. Kids can be a lot of fun to photograph because of their unguarded personalities. It is fun to see just how they will interact with me and with the camera.

Final hours with Allie (aka Motu)

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The Grim Reaper is never an invited guest to a party and he has no reservation about crashing one.

Animals can sometimes be our best friend. When it seems like there is no one else in the world we can turn to for comfort we can always seek solace in their company. They love us unconditionally. They do not judge us or question our command. In fact they find comfort in knowing we are all powerful and in control. Even when lightening is flashing, thunder is booming, and the world seems to be imploding they feel safe because we tell them everything is OK. They patiently anticipate the time when we come out to feed them, play with them, hug them and talk with them. They don’t understand the complexities of our language but they feel our emotions and they comfort us with their companionship. For years they are part of our lives. When the day comes that we must part a loneliness enters our world, a loneliness like nothing that words can describe.

For a week now, we have held out hope of a medical miracle. Our aging golden retriever, Motu, who Janice and the kids affectionately renamed to Allie, wasn’t feeling very good. Her voracious appetite had diminished and she was not eating. There were tell tale signs something wasn’t right. We would find (what we now know to be) puddles of vomited bile next to her food bowl. With some blood tests we learned Allie had kidney and liver failure to further complicate her arthritis. We began treating her with antibiotics to fight off what was feared to be a liver infection. After numerous other tests, we were informed she did not have cancer but she did have Cushing’s Disease. Allie would require an extremely strict diet once we were able to treat her liver and kidney disease. The doctors were able to get her liver and kidney enzymes moving in the right direction and then we discovered she had Pancreatitis. Allie was unable to eat or drink anything without serious vomiting shortly thereafter. Her prognosis was fatal. She could not be kept alive with an IV.

After a week in the veterinarian hospital, we decided to bring her home for a day with the family in familiar surroundings before putting her to sleep. We were to keep her from eating or drinking so she did not get immediately sick. We had a day to spend with Allie before dehydration would start to be a problem. I explained to the family that we need not scare the animal with hysterical crying but rather to make her feel loved and welcome. Like any animal, she instinctively knows her time is near. She no longer fights Cabo (our three legged dog) for the position of “top dog”. She just offers her unconditional love to us sensing our repressed sadness.

These photos are the last hours the family will spend with our beloved pet. In the morning, I will accompany Janice to the vet’s office where we will confidently walk Allie into the examination room, confirming that the doctor will help her. Janice will hug her lovingly as the doctor administers the fatal injection. I will look Allie in the eyes calmly telling her to relax and rest in peace. Her eyes will close, her breathing will stop, her heart will stop, and she will feel no pain. At that moment the room will feel huge and empty. I will feel insignificant as I try to comfort Janice and hold chaos at bay. I will wrap Allie’s body up in a sheet and bring it home to be buried in the pet cemetery in our yard. I have already chosen her final resting place and have dug the grave. I am hopeful that the rain will hold off until after our vigil. We will celebrate the wonderful life Allie shared with us and cherish our memories of her.

In the hours and days that follow, we shall mourn our loss. In the days, weeks and years ahead, we will visit Allie’s grave and remember the wonderful times we shared together. We will never replace Allie, that is not possible nor would we want to. But, the day will come when another wonderful animal will enter our lives and we shall once again assume the role of responsible pet owner in exchange for years of unconditional love.

Fashion funds the cure – a day of pampering

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Sunday, March 7, 2010 was a day of pampering for eleven brave girls who are either fighting or surviving cancer and for their equally brave mothers. One look at their faces and you can feel the depth of character they’ve found to embrace their battle. At 12:30 PM these ladies arrived at the front entrance to Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza in Atlanta and stepped out of the Mercedes Benz that chauffeured them to the event. Each mother/daughter pair was escorted inside by their driver. Excitement was in the air as each of these ladies knew what to expect but not sure how it would all unfold. This event is a preliminary to the big fund raising event “Fashion Funds the Cure” hosted at Saks Fifth Avenue on Tuesday, March 30 at 6:00 PM.

These cancer fighting girls will join a troop of professional models showing the best of Saks’ 2010 fashion collections. The girls are living tributes to wonder of modern medicine and the power of determination.

The Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research is hosting Fashion Funds the Cure to benefit the Aflac Cancer Center & Blood Disorders Service of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Mercedes Benz and Saks Fifth Avenue are sponsoring the event. Atlanta Falcons linebacker, Curtis Lofton will chair the event while local celebrities, Jeff Dauhler and his wife Jessica, serve as emcees for the evening.

Tickets for the event are still available at the Rally Foundation website: rallyfoundation.org. Patron tickets are also available which allow guests to attend a VIP cocktail reception with Curtis Lofton and other local celebrities.

It’s a lot of work to get prettied up for a fashion show but it is also good fun shared by mother and daughter! After a quick snack and light socializing, the girls split up and go in a variety of directions. Some to the hair stylist, others to the make up artist, and the remainder to manicure. Hair, nails, and makeup are key essentials for a girl’s beauty treatments.

Off to the dressing room! Wardrobe selection is always fun! The girls get to preview all the lovely clothes and select the outfit they will model on the runway. The dressing room is a little crowded but there are plenty of clothes for everyone. The ladies from Saks Fifth Avenue have organized a wardrobe of several outfits for each girl to try on and make her selection. Even the youngest girls love to try on new clothes. They all know what they like. It’s a tough decision but that final look in the mirror, when they see just how beautiful they are the decision is final.

Once that perfect outfit is selected it’s time to practice walking the runway. There will be lots of people watching and the girls want to put on a great show! With a little coaching these girls will be strutting just like the supermodels in New York, London, Paris and Milan.

The day was full of activities and lots of work to plan this fashion show. One thing for sure, everyone had big smiles on their faces!

These images are just a preview of what is to be on March 30, 2010 when Fashion Funds the Cure debuts at Saks Fifth Avenue in Phipps Plaza. Mark your calendar and get your tickets. This is expected to be a sell-out event.
